We Live In The Tropics
Wow, what a summer! I can’t ever remember it being this hot and steamy for so long. The humidity is unbearable. Why take a shower! You can just walk outside and you’re drenched. Okay, I guess people would avoid me more than they do now, if I tried that showering method! It’s a bad hair day every day and who wants to even think about putting on makeup.
My new perfume this summer is OFF - the bug spray. You can’t leave home without it. Actually, you can’t leave house without it. This morning, I needed to water the flower beds, so I sprayed myself before venturing out and they were BITING THROUGH THE SPRAY! I didn’t think it was possible - thought I must have missed a few spots - so I went back for another dose - I got two more bites afterward. Maybe it’s becoming their drug of choice!
We’re on the call list to get Code Red Alerts from our township. I guess they realize the problem too, since we’ve received two alerts in the last week that advised that they’d be spraying by helicopter in the wee hours of the morning for the Tiger mosquito. These suckers don’t just set upon us at dusk, like the typical humdrum, run-of-the-mill mosquitoes. These guys come out during the day too!
We needed rain badly and our prayers were answered. Almost every night we’ve gotten a downpour that lasts about 10 minutes - doesn’t do much for the lawn or the plants, but it certainly helps the mosquito population. Ouch!
So between the humidity and the bugs, it has taken all the fun out of gardening this summer. Things look so pretty from the coolness of the house but don’t even think about venturing out. You never know what’s lurking out there. RUNNN!!!
