Non Stop Begonias

I love these annuals.  They brighten up any pot and do well in the garden too.  As long as they are not overwatered, not underwatered and have good drainage.  A little finicky but well worth it for the show of color they put out all summer long til frost.  Best in part sun and will do well in the shade also, provided you don’t overwater.   If in sun, they prefer early morning or late afternoon sun.  They cannot take direct afternoon sun or they will burn up!

All the colors are vibrant, including the rose petticoat which is white and rose color with ruffled edges, hence the petticoat reference.  Great in a planter or urn with some spike, vinca and a few impatiens to add another splash of color.  We used some lilac ones as a combination in a client’s set of three urns we recently did.

We’ve been using the variety called Fire the last two years.  Bright yellows and oranges on the same plant.  Absolutely spectacular in a windowbox or planter with black velvet coleus, asparagus fern, lime green sweet potato vine and blue lobelia.  When I get as psyched up about snapping pictures as I am about gardening, I might even take a picture to add to this blog.  Hmmm, we’ll see…

These great plants are also called tuberous begonias, because they actually are tubers that may be taken up at the end of the season and stored until the next spring and set out again.

If you haven’t tried any yet, just go buy one plant and see the show it gives you all summer.  Next year, I’ll bet you’ll be scrambling for more…

Remember, good drainage, part sun to shade.  Don’t dry them out and sit back and enjoy them.  Please send me a note to let me know what you think of them too!

Bye for now.

MJ
